W. Smith, Jr. Elementary School National Beta Club members were in perfect sync at this year’s Louisiana Elementary Beta Club Convention, winning third place in the Performing Arts Group Elementary category.

Each year, schools from across Louisiana compete in a wide array of competitions, demonstrating academic achievement, character, leadership, and service. The Super Stars at Smith Elementary truly adhere to the Beta Motto — Let Us Lead by Serving Others.

The Super Stars participated in three categories: Performing Arts Solo, Songfest, and Performing Arts Group. The first performer to take the stage was Kylee Hazel. She performed a musical solo to the song “Unstoppable” in the Performing Arts Solo category. Next, an incredible group of students performed an original song focused on the National Beta theme “Beta Together.” This performance included Mi’Chaelyn Alexander, Kaisyn Banks, Keith Banks, Jazae Branch, Terrionne Brazil, Lesle’ Edwards, Dylan Edwards, Promise Green, Kylee Hazel, Layla Heidel, Jarett Jones, and Lily Suazo.

Smith’s final performance of the day was in the Performing Arts Group category, which included members of the Shooting Stars Pep Squad/Dance Team. Mi’Chaelyn Alexander, Kaisyn Banks, Terrionne Brazil, Kylee Hazel, and Lily Suazo were entered into the Performing Arts Group category and performed a jazz dance. Over 20 schools competed in this category, and Smith’s Performing Arts Group placed third overall and received a “Golden Ticket” to work with a professional choreographer and be in the National Beta opening ceremony performance in Nashville, Tenn., this summer.

School sponsors for the club are Brittany Torres, Marjorie Woodward, Drionne Major, and Alexandra Casarez.

Torres said the success was a rewarding team effort. “Watching our Super Stars take the stage with confidence and excitement was the most rewarding experience of this whole trip,” she said.

The W. Smith, Jr. Elementary Chapter of Junior Beta Club was established in 2011 and currently has 18 members.

Louisiana proudly hosts the largest Junior Beta state convention in the nation. National Beta chapters can be found throughout the U.S. and across the globe, with clubs in China, Japan, Guam, Russia, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Panama, and Puerto Rico.
