Cutline: (Pictured, l-r): Jeff Southerland Kiwanis President and Sal LaRock and Barbara LaRock of the Kiwanis Dawn Buster’s Club. A recent Kiwanis meeting at Rocky & Carlo’s featured Sal LaRock from the Kiwanis Dawn Buster’s Club in Metairie. Larock presented a program that he is trying to start up for Kiwanis Kids within their Rewards for Reading Program. The Dawn Busters Club of Metairie is in 53 Schools in Jefferson Parish and have been serving the Jefferson Parish Community for 44 years. This program came from an idea to teach Kids to Read with other programs as “Read to Lead,” “Rocky the Rooster SuperHero Reading Program Coloring Book,” and “Read to Succeed Literacy Program”. “I am a Kiwanian,” said Larock, “and making a difference in the community is where I’m coming from.” This is a Pre-K & Kindergarten reading program using coloring books and rewards to promote reading. The goal is to make this a statewide program within all the Kiwanis Clubs in Louisiana.
