The St. Bernard Parish Public School System is proud to introduce Michael P. Morel as the district’s new manager for its Food Services and Child Nutrition Programs.

Morel joins the district after a distinguished 21-year naval career where his varied experiences ranged from managing food service and security support for the President of the United States to coordinating meals aboard a nuclear submarine.

Morel, a St. Bernard native, said he is happy to be home and excited about his new role.

“When this amazing opportunity arose, I decided what better way to give back to the same community that educated and prepared me for the world,” he said.

Morel has two immediate goals.

“First of all, I want to ensure that all the children of St. Bernard Parish have the best, well-balanced meals available to them,” he said. “I am also hoping to teach the district’s cafeteria managers and technicians new and innovative ways of cooking and operating all the cafeterias parish-wide.”

Morel was quick to thank his predecessor for her help in transitioning into his new position. “Joni Blum has done an amazing job in our schools for a long time,” he said. “Even though she is small in stature, Joni leaves some pretty big shoes to fill. I am grateful for her service and dedication to the children in our schools, and I hope to continue to build on the great foundation she established.”

Morel is no stranger to the school system. A graduate of Andrew Jackson High School, Morel is also married to Heather Morel, the principal of Lacoste Elementary School in Chalmette.

The Morel family lives in Chalmette and has a daughter, Grace.
