Annually, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association recognizes senior athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom by inviting eligible students to be part of the Academic All State teams. This year, Chalmette High School is proud to announce that 15 graduating seniors have earned this honor for their exemplary performance in sports and academics.

CHS Athletic Director David Brossette said the students are chosen based on their grade point average from their first six semesters of high school. Eligible students must also have participated in the sport for at least two years.

Students with a 4.0 are invited to the Composite Team. This year’s honorees include Melanie Corral Kayla Melerine, cross country and track; Emma Nunez, volleyball, basketball, and tennis; and Arianna Rojas, cross country and soccer.

Students with a 3.5-3.99 GPA are invited to the Class Team. This year’s honorees include Adriana Badillo, Soccer; Daniela Bermudez, tennis; Kine Buie, cross country and soccer; Christian Carrion, tennis; Alexander Cox, swimming; Paul Cusimano, cross country and track; Ashley Dourrieu, volleyball, basketball, and softball; Ethan Gilchrist, cross country, soccer, and tennis; Lawrence Jenkins, football and track; Mercy Maldonado-Lendos, soccer; Lydia Semexant, soccer; and Marco Spicuzza, wrestling.

Brossette said the students are usually recognized at the state championship game in that particular sport, but due to Covid-19, this year the awards were mailed to the school.

“I consider both teams a huge accomplishment,” Brossette said. “Receiving this recognition gives true meaning to the term student-athlete.”
